Bobcats Outlast Shady Spring 26-12

The Summers County Bobcats got back at it last Friday when they traveled to Raleigh County to meet the Shady Spring Tigers. The Bobcats had a week off to shrug off the loss week one earlier to PikeView. The Bobcats broke a second quarter scoreless game on a Tucker Lilly short touchdown run and took a 6-0 lead and never looked back.

Summers grabbed a 20-6 lead after a Tucker Lilly 62 yard gallop to the end zone with the Tigers’ defense in chase , Lilly left them in the dust and scored, after a two point conversion the Bobcats were up by two touchdowns and this spelled the beginning of the end for Shady Spring.

Marcus McGuire ran for two touchdowns on the night including the last one midway through the fourth quarter giving the Bobcats a final score of 26-12. McGuire ran for 151 yards and Tucker Lilly ran for 85 yards on the ground along with his two touchdown runs. Lilly was under center because regular quarterback Tim Persiani left with an injury.

The Bobcats, now 1-1, will travel to Welch this Friday to battle the Mount View Golden Knights (2-1). Mount View is much improved from years past and this game will be a challenge for Summers County as the Golden Knights have a very good offense. Summers County defeated Mount View last year in Hinton.

Bobcats Stopped by Panthers

The Summers County Bobcats opened the 2017 season falling to PikeView 25-19 in a thriller of a opening game in Hinton on Friday night. The Bobcats played well, but PikeView’s defense would save the day in the end with a great defensive stand and a interception return for a touchdown.

Marcus McGuire had two touchdowns for Summers County on the night and Andrew Richmond hauled in a touchdown catch from Timmy Persiani.  The Bobcats also had a extra point blocked and a two point conversion stopped.

PikeView’s Hunter Mitchelson and Evan Rose each had two touchdowns for the Panthers as Rose had a 77 yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter that helped the Panthers stave off the Bobcats, as Summers County quarterback Timmy Persiani was sacked on the final play of the game after the Bobcats had gotten within inches of the goal line on a pass to Tucker Lilly the play before.

Summers County will be idle next Friday, but will then travel to Shady Spring (1-0) in week three of the season. The Bobcats played hard on Friday night, but must recover from this tough loss as the schedule will get tougher as they go along this season.

PikeView Comes to Hinton as 2017 Season Opens

The 2017 high school football season begins Friday night officially after a trio of games on Thursday night in other areas across the state. Summers County ushers in the new season as the PikeView Panthers visit Hinton from Mercer County.

The Panthers have long been on Summers County’s schedule down through the years as both teams have played some very good games in the series. Chris Vicars debuts as the Bobcats’ new head coach after Nate Tanner headed to Martinsville, Virginia this summer. Vicars did turn around Independence High School (Raleigh County) in his short tenure there before returning home to coach the Bobcats.

The Bobcats lost some experience to graduation, but also bring back some experience in 2017 as Timmy Persiani will be behind center for the Bobcats. Marcus McGuire and Tucker Lilly both are back and as in the past Summers County will have some size and height at the wide receiver position with Andrew Richmond and Khalil Honaker. Jacob McBride also will return for the Bobcats.

Several players will play on both sides of the ball for the Bobcats including several of the names listed above. The Bobcats were (8-3) in 2016 losing to Gilmer County in the Class A playoffs.

PikeView was (2-8) in 2016 and has struggled a bit in recent years, but also brings back some key players in 2017 including Evan Rose a 1,000 yard rusher a year ago and is a threat to score when getting the ball. The offensive line also is experienced and very solid.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 at Garten Stadium.

Meador New Coach of Lady Bobcats

Chad Meador a long time assistant coach for the Lady Bobcats’ basketball team is now the head coach at the school. Meador  has been coaching at the school for nearly two decades.

Meador inherits a team that went 24-3 last winter and made a trip to Charleston to the state tournament in Class A.  The Lady Bobcats must replace four key players this winter, two of whom where the Justice sisters who both broke scoring records while at Summers County High School.

The Lady Bobcats have won seven state titles since 1994, including five straight from 2007-2011 in Class AA. Sarah Blevins who coached the Lady Bobcats last winter in her one and only season as head coach left for a job in another state. Wayne Ryan held that job the 21 previous seasons in Hinton.

The Bobcats Have a New Coach in 2017

The 2017 edition of the Summers County Bobcats will look a little different than in years past. The Bobcats welcome Chris Vicars as the new head coach this fall, as the former Independence football boss now commands the Bobcats. Nate Tanner, whom had very good success during his time in Hinton, moved on to neighboring Virginia to coach at Martinsville High School.

Tanner’s impact on the program was great and will be remembered as some of the most successful seasons in school history. The Bobcats made several playoff appearances in both Class AA and Class A in the last several years, they did not win a playoff game, but that’s not necessarily the point considering Summers County once struggled to win games in the fall. The Bobcats also hosted a playoff game for the first time in school history during Tanner’s tenure.

Mr.Vicars also turned Independence High School (Coal City, W.Va.) around while he was there as the Patriots saw playoff appearances in each of the last two seasons and boasted a very good running game with several different running backs in 2016. The Bobcats must replace Nathan Grimmett who was one of their workhorses the last few years as he now moves on to college. Summers County still has plenty of talent and will be on the radars of their 2017 opponents.

Vicars is a Hinton resident and was once an assistant coach for Summers County and also works in the county’s school system, so the hire seemed a fitting one for all those involved. We wish Coach Vicars well as he begins his tenure as Bobcats’ head football coach and we wish Coach Nate Tanner future success as he moves onto Martinsville to coach the Bulldogs.

The Summers County Bobcats begin preseason camp in early August and will battle PikeView on August 25th to begin the 2017 season.

Summers County Track Teams Compete In State Track Meet In Charleston

Bobcats and Lady Bobcats track teams competed In WVSSAC State Track Meet In Charleston over the weekend.

Kinzy Martin would tally 6 points for the Lady Bobcats as she finished third overall in Class A girls discus throw on Friday evening.  The Lady Bobcats finished 18th as a team overall in the competition, as there were several schools that finished behind Summers County.

Jacob McBride scored three points in the Class A Boys Long Jump  as he finished fourth in the competition. The Bobcats finished 23rd overall in a crowded field of schools from across the state. Tucker Bennett (discus) and Brandon Maddy (Shot Put) also competed in the competition.

Bobcats Had A Busy Week Of Baseball

The Summers County Bobcats stayed busy this week on the diamond as they won 2 of 3 games before falling to Greater Beckley Christian in the sectional final.

Summers County first hammered Greenbrier West 11-1.  Kanyon Brogan and Chase Adkins each hit a home run off Cavaliers’ pitching in the win. Sam Wykle was 3 for 4 and also had three RBI’s.

The win over Greenbrier West and a big win over Montcalm of 10-0 propelled the Bobcats into the sectional final with Greater Beckley Christian where they fell 11-1 on Thursday evening, but still a job well done by the Bobcats in 2017.

Bobcats Fall to Greater Beckley in Extra Innings

The Summers County Bobcats come out on the short end of a high school baseball thriller with Greater Beckley Christian.

The Bobcats and Crusaders battled for nearly eight innings of scoreless baseball before in the the bottom of the eighth a Crusader launched a Bobcats’ pitch over the the fence for  two run walk off homer for Greater Beckley and sends the Crusaders on to further Class A postseason action.

Lady Bobcats Have No Answer For Greenbrier West

The Lady Bobcats ran into a buzz-saw twice this week and both times it was named Greenbrier West. The Lady Cavaliers first defeated Summers County 15-2 on Tuesday in Hinton as play in Class A – Region 3 – Section 2 got into full swing. Miranda Billings grabbed the loss for the Lady Bobcats as the Lady Cavaliers’ bats were too hot on the evening.

The Lady Bobcats in between the battles with Greenbrier West did grab an exciting 9-8 win over Montcalm to stay alive for the time being.  The Two teams went back and forth as the Lady Bobcats would score twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the win and stay alive. Summers County had 14 hits versus the Lady Generals.

Summers County via that victory now had to play the Lady Cavaliers once again and the result was more of the same as Greenbrier West rolled 19-1 over Summers County. The Lady Bobcats once again fell victim to healthy Lady Cavaliers’ offense and got into a hole early and never recovered.
